but guys Sherlock’s not even his first name but he still uses it, isn’t that ridiculous???

So Sherlock is not his first name, which means his parents weren’t just being creative—it was probably a family name.  Hypothetically, there could have been another Sherlock Holmes.  An older Sherlock Holmes. Perhaps, even, a Sherlock Holmes that lived in Victorian England—the great great great grandfather of modern Sherlock.

Also, some people actually use a middle name instead of their first name. For example, my mum’s name is Samantha, but her middle name’s Jayne. Since she preferred her middle name she got everyone to call her Jayne. My English teacher does the same. It’s not actually that uncommon.
